I have been trying to research him, but Im not coming up with much.
Your uncle’s entry on the list of Dutch helpers shows that Allied Military Intelligence awarded him a Grade 5, the most common award (a grade 1 is the highest) and that it was posthumous (did he die in a concentration camp or was he shot outright?). If you go to the page on the website “FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS, What Did My Mother, Father, etc. Do in the Resistance?” (at https://wwii-netherlands-escape-lines.com/faqs/faqs-resistance/) you will find suggestions for research. There are links to ordering copies of a helper’s file from the National Archives directly or through a professional researcher. Once you have his file, there may be entries in it giving the names of his contacts in the Resistance, the names of airmen he helped, etc., and you can follow them up. If there is the name of an American airman, the airman’s escape and evasion report may be available online and may provide more details (see https://wwii-netherlands-escape-lines.com/research/national-archives-research/escape-evasion-reports-available-on-line/). If he died in a concentration camp, you may want to contact the International Tracing Service at https://www.its-arolsen.org/en/homepage/index.html.

I have an addition to the list of Dutch helpers: Henriette Jacoba Roosenburg (1916-1972), known as Jet or Yet Roosenburg. At her grave in France is a memorial plaquette bij de Royal Airforce Society and her family received a condolence letter from that same society. I am currently researching her activities and trying to British files on her at the RAFES archives, which is how I came across this website. Roosenburg was connected with the well-known resistance woman Joke Folmer, named in the list. They were betrayed, condemned to death in 1944, but survived nonetheless.
Reply: “Jet” Roosenburg was an important figure in the Resistance, specifically in the escape and intelligence line first known as Luctor et Emergo, later as Fiat Libertas. An organization chart of Fiat Libertas, compiled probably by the SD (the SS secret police) or by the Abwehr (German Military Intelligence), appears on this website at https://wwii-netherlands-escape-lines.com/other-escape-lines/luctor-et-emergofiat-libertas/. It shows Jet Roosenburg as heading the intelligence part of Fiat Libertas’ intelligence operation.

My mother Sophia Louisa Christina Elzinga residing at 51 P.C. Hooftstraat Amsterdam was a courier for the Dutch Resistance after being recruited by Hans Schippers who was killed in prison. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1958.
I have not been able to trace any records of her contribution to the war effort but she told us many stories of biking every afternoon throughout Amsterdam collecting information from canal boatmasters and train movements which she then dropped off at diverse locations. Is her name on any lists of resistance fighters. She suffered from PTSD all her subsequent life.

Although your mother’s name does not appear on the list of persons from Amsterdam who helped Allied airmen, that of Hans Schippers does. I recommend that you order a copy of his file from the U.S. National Archives. On this website see the headings “WWII Escape and Evasion Research,” then “National Archives Research (U.S.),” then “Notes on Using the Textual Research Room.” The second of the three headings at the end provides information on a professional researcher who can look up and copy Schippers’ helper file for you. Files on helpers of airmen are limited to that subject. I recommend that you also go to NIOD, the Dutch WWII archive in Amsterdam, at http://www.niod.nl/, and see if they have any additional information on him or your mother. Also look at their newspaper clippings index (at http://www.niod.knaw.nl/sites/niod.nl/files/KnipselcollectieNIOD.pdf ). There are five Elzingas although none have first names identical to your mother’s. Also check the entries for Schippers. There is a clipping on Hans Schippers that appeared in Het Parool that might be useful.
